Best Eco & Community Lodges in Uganda (2026)
Lodges committed to environmental sustainability, community partnerships, and responsible tourism practices.
59 lodges · Independent guide · Updated 2026
Quick Answer
Standout eco lodges include Bakiga Lodge in Ruhija (non-profit, funds water projects), Buhoma Community Rest Camp (community-run since 1993), Bwindi Lodge by Volcanoes Safaris (community partnership model), Kyambura Gorge Lodge (community coffee project), and Mihingo Lodge at Lake Mburo (eco-built into rocky hillside).
Uganda's tourism industry has deep roots in community conservation. Many of the country's best lodges were built with — or by — local communities, and several operate as non-profit enterprises where all revenue flows back into conservation and development projects.
Eco lodges in Uganda range from basic community guesthouses to high-end properties with sophisticated sustainability programmes. What unites them is a commitment to minimising environmental impact while maximising benefit to local people. In a country where communities live alongside mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, this approach is not just ethical — it is essential for the long-term survival of the wildlife that draws visitors in the first place.

Baker's Lodge
$$$$South Bank · Murchison Falls National Park · Luxury
Baker's Lodge has 10 thatched safari suites raised on pillars along the south bank of the River Nile in Murchison Falls National Park. The suites have a canvas and mesh river-facing front that rolls back, opening the room directly to the Nile. Each suite has an en suite bathroom with solar-heated showers, and some include bathtubs. King-size or twin bed configurations are available, along with Wi-Fi, minibar, and room service. The lodge is now managed by andBeyond, which brings an established safari hospitality standard to the property. Common areas include a thatched lounge, a bar, a swimming pool, and an outdoor dining deck overlooking the river. All furniture is locally handcrafted, and the property runs on solar power — part of an eco-friendly design that keeps the camp's footprint light on the riverbank. Activities from Baker's Lodge include game drives on the northern bank (reached via the Paraa ferry), Nile boat cruises to the base of Murchison Falls, chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest, and bird watching along the river. The south bank location is quieter than the Paraa area, and the intimate scale of the lodge — just 10 suites — keeps the atmosphere relaxed. Baker's Lodge is often chosen by travelers who want a smaller, more exclusive property on the Nile with direct river views from their room.

Ishasha Wilderness Camp
$$$$Ishasha · Ishasha · Luxury
Ishasha Wilderness Camp is a 10-tent safari camp on the banks of the Ntungwe River in the remote southern Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Each canvas tent has a private verandah facing the river, an en suite bathroom with hot bush showers, and eco-friendly flush toilets. The camp is deliberately small, maintaining an intimate atmosphere in a part of the park that sees far fewer visitors than the northern sections around Mweya. The central area consists of a thatched lounge and dining space with an outdoor fireplace where guests gather in the evenings. Meals are served al fresco by the river when weather permits. The camp provides Wi-Fi and laundry services, though the emphasis here is on the bush experience rather than extensive facilities. The Ishasha sector is famous for its tree-climbing lions, which rest in the branches of fig and sycamore trees — a behaviour seen in very few places in Africa. Game drives from the camp focus on locating these lions along with elephants, buffalo, hippos, and a wide range of antelope species. The remote location and small camp size make Ishasha Wilderness Camp well suited for travelers who want an authentic, quiet bush experience focused on wildlife rather than resort-style amenities.

Mihingo Lodge
$$$$Lake Mburo · Lake Mburo National Park · Luxury
Mihingo Lodge is built on a 500-million-year-old pre-Cambrian granite kopje adjacent to Lake Mburo National Park, with panoramic views across the savannah and down to a waterhole and valley below. The lodge blends into its rocky surroundings by design, using the natural contours of the hillside to integrate the buildings into the landscape. An infinity pool overlooking the valley and waterhole is the centrepiece of the common area. What distinguishes Mihingo from other lodges in Uganda is its activity range, particularly the horseback safari. Mihingo is the only place in Uganda where visitors can ride horses inside a national park — a unique way to experience the savannah alongside zebras, impalas, elands, and other wildlife. Walking safaris with giraffes, guided walking safaris, night game drives, boat trips on Lake Mburo, mountain biking, and conventional game drives are also offered, making this one of the most activity-diverse lodges in the country. The lodge is eco-friendly in its construction and operations, using the natural rock formations as part of the building structure and maintaining a low visual impact on the hillside. Mihingo is well suited for active travelers who want more than a standard game drive experience, and for couples or photographers drawn to the elevated kopje setting with its wide savannah views.

Facilities include a swimming pool, a lounge with fireplace for cooler evenings, and a kids' corner for families traveling with children. On clear days, the snow-capped peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains are visible from the lodge grounds — an unusual sight this far into equatorial Africa. The property sits close to the main road, which means a 4x4 vehicle is not required to reach it, unlike some more remote lodges in the area. Kibale National Park holds one of the highest densities of primates in Africa, with chimpanzee tracking as the primary draw. The lodge serves as a practical base for exploring both Kibale and the wider Fort Portal crater lakes region.

The Boma Entebbe occupies a restored 1940s colonial building set on landscaped grounds in a quiet residential area of Entebbe, roughly 10 minutes from the international airport. The property has 15 individually decorated en-suite rooms spread across the main building and garden wings, each featuring a mix of African fabric accents and colonial-era furnishings. Architectural details — polished stone floors, exposed timber beams, wide verandas — reflect the building's original character. Rooms come with four-poster beds draped in mosquito netting, satellite TV, Wi-Fi, and private verandas or balconies. The hotel grounds include a swimming pool, a small gym, secure parking, and 24-hour security. The on-site restaurant draws on European, Indian, Thai, and Mediterranean influences, and the bar area offers views toward Lake Victoria. Breakfast is typically served on the veranda. The Boma is often chosen by travelers arriving late or departing early from Entebbe Airport who want something more characterful than a standard airport hotel. The Entebbe Botanical Gardens are about a 15-minute bicycle ride away, and the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre is a short drive. For visitors with a layover day in Entebbe, the combination of the pool, restaurant, and proximity to the gardens makes this a practical and comfortable base.

$$Bugala Island · Victoria Lake Islands · Mid-range
Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Lodge is the overnight accommodation at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, operated by the Chimpanzee Trust (formerly the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust, CSWCT). The sanctuary occupies a 100-acre forested island on Lake Victoria, home to 49 rescued chimpanzees that cannot be released into the wild. The island is reached by a 45-minute speedboat ride from Entebbe. Both day visits and overnight stays are available. Day visitors observe the chimpanzees during feeding times from a raised platform at the forest edge. Overnight guests have the additional experience of evening and early-morning feeding sessions, when fewer visitors are present, and the chance to see the chimps in a quieter setting. The lodge accommodation is basic but functional, with the emphasis firmly on the sanctuary experience rather than luxury facilities. The Chimpanzee Trust uses revenue from visits and overnight stays to fund the care of the resident chimps and support broader conservation and education programmes. Ngamba Island is one of the most accessible primate experiences in Uganda — it does not require a long drive into the western forests and can be combined with a stay in Entebbe at the start or end of a safari itinerary.

Rwakobo Rock is built on a natural rocky outcrop at the edge of Lake Mburo National Park, approximately five minutes from the Nshara Gate. The lodge is family-run and takes an eco-friendly approach, including the use of purified water on site. Accommodation is spread across several buildings: Hornbill House (with five rooms), Monkey Cottage, additional standalone cottages, and safari tents — giving a range of options from solid-walled rooms to canvas-under-thatch. The swimming pool overlooks the Nshara ranchlands and the park boundary, while the dining area has views of a watering hole frequented by zebra, warthog, impala, and bushbuck. This combination of a lodge that doubles as a wildlife viewpoint is one of Rwakobo's distinguishing features. Fast internet is available, and the kitchen offers vegetarian options alongside standard Ugandan and international dishes. Activities run both by day and after dark: game drives, walking safaris, cycling safaris through the park, night drives, Bahima cultural visits, birdwatching (Lake Mburo is one of Uganda's stronger birding sites), volleyball, and stargazing from the kopje. Lake Mburo is the closest savannah national park to Kampala, making Rwakobo a practical stop on routes heading southwest toward Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth.
