Victoria Lake Islands

The Ssese Islands and other Lake Victoria islands offer beaches, fishing, forest walks, and a laid-back island atmosphere off Uganda's southern coast.

About the Region

The Ssese Islands are an archipelago of 84 islands in the northwestern part of Lake Victoria. The largest and most visited is Bugala Island, accessible by ferry from Bukakata or Entebbe. The islands offer sandy beaches, palm-fringed shores, forest walks, and a slower pace of life.

Other Lake Victoria islands — including Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary — offer day trips from Entebbe. The islands appeal to travellers looking for a beach getaway, fishing trips, or a break from the safari circuit. Accommodation ranges from basic camps to comfortable lodges.
