About Wildwaters Lodge

Wildwaters Lodge occupies Kalagala Island, a private island on the River Nile roughly 25 km downstream from Jinja. Access is by boat only — there is no road or bridge to the island — which gives the property an immediate sense of remoteness despite being a relatively short drive from Jinja town. The lodge is now managed by Lemala, a safari operator with properties across East Africa.

The lodge has 10 cottages, each approximately 92 square metres, built on wooden stilts using a combination of canvas, stone, and thatch. Every cottage faces the river and the surrounding rapids. Inside, rooms have king-size four-poster beds with mosquito nets, a daybed, en suite bathrooms with granite basins and rain showers, and freestanding bathtubs placed on private decks overlooking the water. A natural swimming pool carved from the island's rock formation, a day spa, and a small library round out the common facilities.

The rate is all-inclusive: two-course lunches and five-course dinners prepared with local ingredients are standard. Activities available from the island include whitewater rafting, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, quad biking, horseback riding, nature walks, and an African Queen-style boat cruise on the Nile. Wildwaters is well suited for travelers who want a luxury Nile experience combined with adventure activities, and for couples looking for an unusual setting that feels disconnected from the outside world.
